Choosing the right brush and comb

A professional groomer will have many types of brushes and Combs to deal with the different coats and will know how to use them properly. Dog hair comes in a wide range of types and textures, soft, silky, fine, dense, coarse, straight or curly hair varies a lot even from breed to breed.

For shorthair breeds like Fox Terriers or Dobermanns, use a firm bristle brush or a rubber mitt or pad. The rubber pad or mitt will grab and remove loose hair and the bristle brush will give the coat a polish and massage the skin and help to remove the dandruff, it also moves the oil from the skin to the hair helping to prevent spit hairs. The type of comb for this coat should be medium to fine to help in the removal of dead hair and dirt.

For long haired dogs like the Poodle, Bichon or Kerry Blue Terrier, a slicker brush should be used to help untangle and remove loose hair. A pin brush could be used if there are no knots. A medium/coarse comb is recommended to comb and untangle knots and should be used to check the coat is knot free. For badly knotted coat a dematting/untangling comb is recommended, these help to cut through the knots and reduce the pain of de-knotting.

Silky Coated breeds such as Shih Tzu, Maltese and Yorkshire Terriers with single coats, a pin brush is suitable if there are no matts but for tangles a slicker brush is more suitable, for severe knots a damatting comb would be more suitable.

For double coated breeds and Collies, Corgis, German Shepherds are a good example, quite a number of brushed can be used, a wire slicker to remove the loose hair, a pin brush if there are only a few tangles and an undercoat rake or mat untangler if the hair is quite knotty. A medium/coarse comb should also be used.

Gundog breeds - Setters and Spaniels benefit best from a slicker brush especially if the coat is a bit matted it will also help to remove loose, dear hair. A medium/coarse comb can also be used. For serious matts and tangles you may need to use a mat removing rake.
